The 1000 post avatar is given by the admins, it's not something i made, I believe they put it on your profile when you hit the mark and stays there for a bit? I don't remember. I think it's cool of them to do.
Regarding how much time I do or don't have, it doesn't really take much time to make an avatar - find a pic, crop, add a caption. Maybe it just comes easily to me.
