I think royal destiny phenomenon usually clouds all logical thinking, which is sad. I don't know how I would have acted in her place. I'd like to think that I would have had more sense but I'm not sure I would have. But what would you have done in Joachim's shoes (assuming of course this is a figurative conversation and you are all capable of imagining existing as a man)? I would have hoped he would have had a little more respect more Alexandra, Nikolai and Felix. Why aren't we all beat him around the head with our handbags?

... would you have been afraid of getting involved with a man who'd been married once ? If divorce would be a rare thing in Europe...then yes. But 50% get divorced. And surely not just because one or both partners are monsters. Bonbon knows the concept of second partners out of her own family. Besides she might have realised, she is very different to wife #1, which might have helped her in her decision

Although I don't find Jokke physically attractive I do think that the way he and his first wife have handled themselves since their break up to be admired and respected. If I were in Maries position the fact that he is able to put his childrens needs first and his own feelings second in all the turmoil, and has forged a decent enough relationship with his first wife so that the children are protected would definitely be a plus point for me. I don't know why Jokke and Alex broke up but what I do like is that you never hear Jokke "trying to get his point across" or justifying/excusing what happened in the media...people say he had affaris, people say Alex had an affair first but they just keep quiet and take the whispers for the sake of their children (or so I believe, please feel free to correct me if I am wrong)
As for Jokke, well he married two very different women at two very different times in his life and the life of the DRF and so probably married the best woman for the job each time. Alex was Denmarks first princess and did a fantastic job but how well would she have done at being demoted to second fiddle and becoming more of a farmers wife? Marie married Jokke at a time when he was less important (because the CP had married and started his own family) and is predominantly a farmers wife with some engagements thrown in....seems to work well IMO.

ITA Gwen. And Maria-ITA also. The minute I saw him light up, the attraction would have ended. I can't stand smoking. DM-I think you have a great point about Marie. I think she's perfectly happy being a farmer's wife. I don't think Alex would have enjoyed that as much.

... would you have been afraid of getting involved with a man who'd been married once ? I mean, there must have been a really serious reason why Alexandra opted out and left such a privileged life behind. If I had been Marie, I guess I'd be asking myself a lot of questions about why his marriage ended and whether I could be next
This is what I have thought about the issue. I know it now. When alexandra married joachim, she said: She is married to the entire country, not a man. But marie said: she wants to do joachim's wife. This is a two kind of concept. joachim divorce because marie know the reason. and when marie married joachim, she is no longer the focus when the media. In fact, that may have contributed to their marriage collapsing.

I don't think I would ever be in her shoes as I don't give out my emailadress to married men (with or without very young children)........

Jokke wouldn't marry Marie if he did not interest and fell in love with her no matter what Marie did. I don't think it had anything to do with Marie had given him her email address or not. (Btw, I don't see any wrong thing with giving email address to married men (with or without any children) since many business people give their business card with email address on it to their potential future clients (esp the rich one) without asking their marriage status).
IMO
As for the thread question, I'm mostly with Gwen, Cece, Shosanah, Hester.
