It was also the installation of the new Duke of Parma, Carlos Xavier. He gave a speech in Spanish and Italian (both fluent). At the reception a reported heard his sister Margarita speaking English, Dutch, French, Spanish and Italian with different guests.
It was hot in the church, most people were sweating because of the heat. The catholic princesses wore a veil. A new wedding date has not been set, but Carlos and Annemarie will marry this year.
Are veils common at Catholic funerals in Europe? I'm a Roman Catholic, but I rarely see a woman/girl wearing a veil during Mass. Yes, it is still common in Italy, and since Carlos Hugo was buried there.... Mathilde, her mother and sisters wore a veil too, on the funeral of Mathildes father. On Maxima's so called smile: it isn't really a smile, and pictures from the inside show she is not smiling anymore. And Maxima never looked tacky on a funeral. You won't see her in trousers for example...

I don't find anything tacky in wearing trousers to a funeral. If women can't wear trousers in the XXIst century there is something wrong. The veils in Europe: As Cara said, here in Spain women used to wear them to mass, but not anymore. I think my mother stopped wearing veils to mass when she finished school, where the nuns required one for every girl.

I don't like trousers for formal funerals either I don't think that they are suitable, but Max is not smiling she has a smug smirk and she looks like she is saying: cameras come to me!

Nah, she isn't like that.
And let's critisie other then too, shall we. Carlos Hugo ex-wife Irene was seen smiling too, as were Jaime (their son) and Margriet and Pieter.

I hate to say this, but why do some of the royals/aristos look do sad and distraught at funerals of people they probably were not close to or really didn't interact with. I know it's supposed to be a sign of respect but some of the people look so fake. So I'm cool with Max's little smile or whatever it was. I don't think she meant harm and I don't see any offense being taken.
I don't think people need to look sad and distraught, and certainly shouldn't fake it. But most funerals, especially royal ones, are solemn occasions, and I think the guests should act accordingly. I love Max's vivaciousness, but this is one of those times when I really wish she'd tone it down and give a polite nod of acknowledgment to the press and onlookers instead of the smiling and smirking. It makes her look like she wasn't taking the occasion seriously, and, although I'm sure nothing could be further from the truth, it's an unfortunate impression to give off. Plus, she looks far too aware of the cameras in those pictures. I know a princess needs to indulge the photographers to a certain extent, but maybe not so much at a funeral. Laurentien's outfit is just awful, but if nothing else, I appreciate the Dutch princesses for their ability to constantly entertain me with their fashion choices.

As I recall the cameras caught Princess Mathilde in a similar expression at a Belgian royal funeral and there was much discussion over her behavior. IMO, these photos are just a moment in time. Who knows what is going through their minds?

Who knows what is going through their minds? I agree that there's no context for the photos. It just looks strange, since there are only 2 or 3 photos of other royals smiling in comparison to all the ones with Max.

I have come to the conclusion that those smirks are Maxima's attempts to appear serious and solemn. When she is smiling, she usually let us see her tonsils in all their glory. The Duke was the ex-husband, right? Surprised that they paid respect to a man once married to their aunt, the divorce was finalized at a time when none of the strange behaving princesses and princes were even of age. Did Maxima, Mabel and Laure as well as the Van V. girls have any relationship with the late Duke?

I agree with you about Max smirk, but it is still smug and not appropiate, especially I hate this picture http://www.ppe-agency.com...x/Aug2010/PPE10082865.jpgBut I've fallen in love with her pearls I don't think they had a relationship with him, I even doubt that Beatrice has a relationship with her sister Anyone knows more about this?

Does anyone know of what kind of relationship the late Duke had with his kids? Most of them did not look solemn enough for me.
Also wasn't the late Duke rumored to be homosexual?
