I don't know anything about this topic, but after reading some posts(and the similar thread in Norway ) I have the idea that not many people support the monarchy in Sweden and that Victoria doesn't contemplate the idea of a republic. What do you think/know? Do you think that Snake Girl(or even Daniel) could have an impact on this? What do the polls say of the RF popularity?

I agree with you Michelle J, it will be around for a while but I do think that this entire Snake Girl stuff will continue to damage it. If people were unhappy with commoner DanDan being Royal, imagine their feelings toward Common Sophia Snake becoming a princess. Commoner is one thing, common is another. If I were a Swede, I wouldn't be very pleased with my tax kroner supporting a Royal Family which includes this type of person.

The republicans stand a lot stronger in Sweden than in many other monarchies. But they always seem to emphasise that it is not about the current RF, but the principle.

I read somewhere, can't remember where that Swedan was the brink of becoming a republic, before Gustav married Sivila. And that Siliva's popularity basically saved the monarchy. Does any one know if this is true?

Hmm, itīs one of these things, which canīt get answered. I am thinking, that Sofia, Paola, or Sonja wouldnīt have been the end either. As we know even women, who bitch at their bridesmaids can create a hype And I am sure, if you make in a rich country a referendum on the Monarchy, ppl will get hit by a hefty "nostalgia flash" Itīs one thing to be against a Monarchy, but itīs an other one to actually vote your favourite hate-love toy self away However CG isnīt the most charismatic person and if he would have married a person, who wouldnīt have learned the language like his mother and who wouldnīt have left the palace and her circles and if both wouldnīt have gotten children, it could have ended. And Silvia was definitely a very smart strategist. The Monarchy might have also survived with others, but she surely made it very popular. This might backfire now though. She is by far not as media-savey as she used to be and after 34 years she could actually speak Swedish a lot better (IMO itīs even getting worse ) Like Mary, Silvia was never doubting her own perfection in public. The perfect family shootings might now seem like fake in the light of the king leaving later for his next bedtime story...

I've never even heard of someone becoming worse in speaking a foreign language the longer they've lived in that country, so that's a pretty special accomplishment. If Mary aims for the stars, I'm sure she can top it one day.

I think you're referring to the fact that there was a gap, after the death of CG;s father. His grandfather, king Gustav II Adolf, had to stay alive until CG could inherit the throne, this is also the reason Bertil couldn't get married. Had he and Bertil had died when CG was still a child, it could have been turned into a republic. Bertil sacrificed his marriage to be a spare, and the difference between him, Gustav II Adolf and Carl Johan and the current "children" in the SRF is huge I don't know what happend, but after the Nazi-era, every single member of the SRF seems to be a moron. It's painful to compare that to the older members of the Bernadotte family, many of them were talented.

I'm sorry Miss W, it's Gustav VI of course, my bad Thanks for correcting me I always think of Gustav II Adolf when I hear that name, especially during November, it was the "Gustav Adolf day" yesterday It's celebrated with his own cake, the "Gustav Adolf cake" A new cake, that won a competition about inventing a new Gustav Adolf cake

Swedish is the second official language in Finland besides the Finnish language. I know this, because born and educated in Finland.
