Felipe was her sponsor (godfather).

That I do find a bit creepy.

Why ? She became more religious because of him, that happened a lot in real life because of the influence of the spouse.

I find that strange too, in the old days, being a godparent counted as becoming a relative and a relationship would be regarded as incest. A godparent was not allowed to marry the child later, it was illegal  Confused The idea of godparents were established during the persecutions of the Christians, and to make sure that children always had a Christian family, if they're parents were executed. So Felipe is not only her husband, but also her extra father  Crazy

The article from El Mundo. It seems even the author himself didn't believe the CNI report was real, why did he use it ? Perhaps the rest of the book is just too boring, copying straightly from cotilleando.com  Wink.

Pocos periodistas conocen a Cunill.

R.— Hemos publicado 28 libros. Tiradas de 2.000 a 5.000 ejemplares.
P— ¿Y del libro de Isidre Cunill?
R.—Prefiero no decírselo.

I read the article in El Mundo yesterday and didn't post anything because I didn't want to give any kind of publicity to this guy, which is the only thing he wants with this. The book is supposed to be about her "wild past" :drugs, sex, abortion etc....
I'm not Letizia's biggest fan, but everything is so ridiculous: She didn't have time to do serious drugs, she started working in a newspaper while being in college, got her masters, won an scholarship to study in Mexico...all while working in different newspapers and radios.
The trip to New York from Mexico is  really absurd, but not as absurd as the fact that he writes he managed to get hold of a CNI report(CNI means National Centre of Intelligence) about Letizia. Apparently this report is the source of his information. He prints part of this "report" in his book: it's filled with obvious spelling mistakes(The CNI needs some new agents, they don't know basic spanish and loose secret reports on the future queen), one of the most remarkable one is that in the report the "y"("and" in spanish) is written as "i".  I only know two "groups" that write "i" in Spain instead of "y": among teenagers is all the rage now to text each other writing "i", and in Catalonian the "y" is "i".  I think that some catalonian separatist made up the report without succes, but I don't know if the writer believes it's real or not.
The publisher is really small, nodoby knew of them until know, they say they publish "controversial" books. I don't know anything about the author, but I refuse to believe he could be a respected journalist having written this book.
I haven't heard anyone mention any gossip about this, but my friends and family rarely talk about the SRF. I don't think this is going to have a big impact beyond royal forums, most spaniards seem aware of Letizia's gossip but they take those rumours with a grain of salt.

Ok, I re-read the article dKaren posted.
"Pocos periodistas conocen a Cunill.
"Few journalists know Cunill. Some think he belongs to the night life, near the yellow(pink) press."
And the publisher says the writer came to them with the idea when his previous publisher refused(obviously) this book.

Jane, maybe you are refering to your godfather and godmother in the baptism? Many people don't have a confirmation anymore here, but in order to get married in a catholic church you are supposed to be, so the priests confirms the person some days(or weeks) before the wedding. Anyone can be a godparent, it's usual for the other spouse as those confirmations are done after some meetings of the couple with the priest.
What I meant with this post is that your baptism godparents are probably family or close friends, but your confirmation godparent doesn't have to be one of your baptism godparents. My grandmother is my godmother but she wasn't my sponsor in my confirmation. Instead it was the woman who "prepared" us for our confirmation.

I mean that in relation to the author. I don't set much stock in these claims. Talk is cheap. Roll Eyes

Elmundo has an article on

'A fake report of CNI in a shady operation against the Princess'.

I wonder if this guy is a Catalan separatist, or was used by some Catalan separatists.

http://estaticos.elmundo....os/2010/09/04/portada.pdf

I think you are on to something here.  I think he is being used by the anti-monarchists to discredit the monarchy via Letizia.   With Juan Carlos getting older and maybe his health not as good as it was, these separatists or anti-monarchists sense a possible Achilles heel in the monarchy and are exploiting it.
Star for the article and the photo.

Star to Clara and Silver for their insight and info.  Why are the rumours about her so harsh?  One of the articles I read last night said that Letizia brings out the passions of the country about her.  She is either really like and respected or totally disliked to the point of hatred.  Spanish members, why the extremes, especially the hatred?

Good posts EA and great questions Star  It does seem like someone's really being harsh and perhaps it is for discrediting the monarchy.  I also question why one would have to fly to NY for an abortion with so many large cities at close range; cities that have a large Spanish-speaking population as well since I'm sure she probably spoke little or no English back then. So maybe this whole article is bullshit; who knows. Or maybe Morey got sick of Leti's good press in the Huffington Post and planted some false information as revenge? Snare

Thank you! Star back atcha!
I would say (though Clara may disagree) that Spain is usually quite factional. Regions are somewhat divergent from each other. For example, many in my hometown of Madrid are nationalists and monarchists, whilst in Barcelona, they're much more independent (for instance, they were the first on the mainland to outlaw bullfighting). I think this is partly a problem about the press too. They're somewhat dramatic about issues like this. Probably because that's what sells, I think. Thinking

I agree with your post Silver, and we are not a quiet or calm country, unlike northern Europe, for example. Everybody loves to complain about anything and everything, and very few people can make a lot of noise. We also have horrible yellow press, the RF doesn't give them much gossip so they blow anything out of proportion. Letizia is the first woman in line to be queen of Spain with no royal or aristocratic family, she was actually middle/low class, and that bothers a lot of people who are willing to believe anything about her. She is the most controversial member of the RF: because she is the next queen, she is the most important woman after Sofía, because she is younger with small children, she attracts more press, because she is a woman, she is held to different standards than men. If someone is interested in attacking Spain as a nation through the RF or the monarchy in itself, Letizia is the best course.
But this is just my opinion, another spaniard could have a very different viewpoint Smiley

I'm not a Letizia sugar-fan but I have to say that I don't buy any of this author's claims for a minute.

First of all-Roe v. Wade (the court case that basically made abortion legal in the US) was brought about by a Texas woman.  Abortion became legal in 1973.  There was no way that Leti would have to go to NY for an abortion.  She could have basically gone to any larger Texas town for the procedure.  (or AZ, NM, CA, etc)  The NY claim seems fishy to me.

Secondly-so what if she was an agnostic?!  Doesn't everybody go through a point where they question their faith?  It seems more likely to me that someone might question their faith at one time or another than for someone to have strong faith all of their life.  I know that Spain is a Catholic country, but I really can't see why this would be potentially damaging to Letizia.  All she has to say is "I questioned my faith and it made me stronger in my religious life".  Big effin' deal, IMO.

As for the confirmation thing, I think that the role Felipe played was as a sponsor.  A sponsor is different from a godparent.  Godparents are appointed during the baptism.  A sponsor is a person who plays a supportive role during the confirmation.  It can be someone in a close friendship type role.  My mother was a sponsor for an elderly lady that she was friends with when this lady converted to Catholicism.

I don't know how the CNI works but did this author mention how he managed to get a hold of these files?  It sounds to me like he could be in trouble for accessing secret government information. Thinking
